The Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) is set to take a leading role in the country’s digital transformation, focusing on enhancing e-commerce, logistics, and public service delivery.
The ambitious vision was pronounced by Prof. Edward Kisiang’ani, Principal Secretary, State Department for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, during the 150th anniversary of World Post Day.
The Kenyan government, as stated by Prof. Kisiang’ani, aims to revitalize the postal sector, positioning it as a vital component of the national digital economy.
Aligning with the National ICT Policy Guidelines of 2020, the initiative seeks to expand postal and courier services to ensure essential services are accessible to citizens, thereby supporting the e-commerce boom and facilitating e-government services.
The government envisions a seamless integration of postal and courier services into the digital marketplace.
Prof. Kisiang’ani stated that to achieve these objectives, the government will facilitate the integration of courier and postal services into the digital marketplace and utilize the postal network to deliver e-services to citizens.
He also outlined plans to foster an attractive investment environment to support the development of infrastructure aligned with national development goals, including the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
During the event, Mr. John Tonui, Postmaster General of the Postal Corporation of Kenya, emphasized the critical role of e-commerce in modern business.
“E-commerce is no longer a luxury but a backbone of modern commerce,” he noted, underscoring the projected doubling of Africa’s e-commerce market to an impressive $75 billion by 2025.
Recognizing the financial difficulties faced by PCK, Prof. Kisiang’ani disclosed that the government is addressing outstanding debts owed to the corporation.
“I am aware that Posta Kenya is struggling with debts, many owed by the government itself. We are actively seeking to resolve these issues,” he stated, emphasizing that clearing these debts would significantly enhance the corporation’s financial health.
He acknowledged that delayed payments from various government entities have compounded Posta’s liquidity challenges, but assured that negotiations are underway to resolve these payment issues.
The government’s strategy also emphasizes leveraging the assets of Posta Kenya to foster e-commerce growth and improve last-mile delivery.
Prof. Kisiang’ani pointed out that Posta’s extensive infrastructure is crucial for achieving the objectives of BETA, particularly in sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and small enterprise development.
“Posta Kenya’s assets are essential for effective last-mile delivery in e-commerce. Our commitment is to protect and optimally utilize these assets,” he said, highlighting potential applications such as delivering medical supplies to remote areas under Universal Health Coverage and providing farmers with essential agricultural inputs.
Prof. Kisiang’ani emphasized the numerous opportunities for Posta Kenya to align with the Bottom-Up development agenda, which focuses on agriculture, small and medium enterprises, housing, healthcare, and the digital economy.
He encouraged Posta’s leadership to strategize in alignment with these key areas to enhance its impact on national development.
David Mugonyi, Director General of the Communications Authority of Kenya, echoed these sentiments, stating that similar postal organizations in other countries have successfully transformed into significant players in logistics, finance, and public services.
Posta has already demonstrated its potential by supporting the Huduma Project, which has transformed public service delivery.
As discussions surrounding state parastatal reforms continue, Prof. Kisiang’ani indicated that PCK is positioned to gain additional responsibilities in logistics, further boosting its revenue streams.
To conclude, Prof. Kisiang’ani reaffirmed the government’s dedication to modernizing Posta Kenya and integrating it into the digital economy.
The government aims to secure Posta’s role as a key service provider in Kenya’s transition to a fully digital economy by promoting investment and innovation within the postal sector.
