KEPRO calls for collective action to accelerate sustainability shift in Nairobi

Nairobi’s crackdown on illegal dumping is a pivotal step, but lasting change hinges on collaboration and sustained efforts, according to the Kenya Extended Producer Responsibility Organization (KEPRO), urging all stakeholders involved in the value- chain process like brands, manufacturers, service providers, and citizens, to uphold their role in closing accountability gaps.

“We applaud the county’s leadership in this regard and reaffirm KEPRO’s commitment to supporting Nairobi’s circular economy goals through Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) compliance,” KEPRO said Tuesday, adding that such efforts were critical in transforming Nairobi into a cleaner, more sustainable city.

The Nairobi City County Government (NCCG) is determined to tackling illegal dumpsites and restructuring waste management systems, but KEPRO wants all businesses and manufactures ensure that waste service providers are provided with valid and necessary licenses and certification and “insist on documented waste trails to ensure transability and auditability.”

Similarly, the organisation has made rallying calls to residents and institutions and waste handlers to demand for proof of authorization from relevant authorities like NEMA, NCCG from collectors before handing over waste and maintain transparent records from collection to disposal respectively.
