Kenya’s inflation rose to 8.04 per cent year-on-year in August from 7.47 per cent last month, the statistics office said Thursday.
The monthly consumer price indices and inflation rate report by Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) attributed the rise on high costs of basic food items, resulting from a depressed supply in the second week of the month leading to elections.
As a result the year-on-year food inflation jumped 13.57 per cent in August compared to 12.19 per cent in July – a period that witnessed prices of basic commodities such as milk skyrocket to Sh60 for a 500ml packet.
During the period under review, the cost of electricity and kerosene also went up by 13.1 per cent (50KWh) and 3.2 per cent respectively, impacting costs associated with housing, water, gas and other fuels which went up by 0.54 per cent.
