Kenya’s independent petroleum dealers down tools on new tax

Independent petroleum dealers in Kenya parked their fuel trucks on Monday as they started an indefinite strike to press the government to reverse a 16 percent value added tax on all petroleum products, the chairman of their association said.

Authorities in the East African nation unexpectedly imposed the tax on Saturday, driving up petrol retail prices at the pump by about 12 percent, and angering many Kenyans who complain of high costs of living.
