Tullow Oil Company has said it is ready to start shipping by road under the Early Oil Pilot Scheme (EOPS) from Lokichar, Turkana to the Coastal town, Lamu.
The company said Tuesday while signing Oil exportation agreement with the Energy ministry, Africa Oil and Maersk Oil that it will start transporting oil using trucks by end of April before actual exportation – to be undertaken on trial – is commenced in June this year.
Initially 2000 barrels was projected to be produced per day, but a further aggressive exploration and drilling of at least eight more wells in North Lokichar by the firm, is expected to scale up production, that will take recoverable resources to over a billion barrels from the current estimated 750 million barrels.
Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter said that the ministry together with its other partners – Maersk Oil and Tullow Oil has set the 2020 timeline for the conclusion of the construction of a pipeline that will move crude oil from Lokichar to Lamu Port, which will see at least 100,000 barrels transported per day.
Build works on the pipeline in currently ongoing, a process that will see Kenya start commercial production in three years.
