Kenya Power’s 132kV Sondu-Ndhiwa Homa Bay Awendo Line comes to LIFE
Kenya Power reaffirmed its commitment to continued collaboration with sector agencies, including KETRACO, to strengthen the national grid and support reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity supply.
Kenya Power has welcomed the switching on of the Sondu – Ndhiwa – Homa Bay – Awendo 132kV transmission line by the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO), noting it will strengthen supply reliability in South Nyanza and parts of South Rift.
The line was switched on January, 28 at 1607hrs, adding a stronger transmission path into the region, easing pressure on constrained corridors, and improving network resilience.
Kenya Power said the switching on followed successful transmission line works and commissioning tests jointly executed with KETRACO to confirm safe integration into the grid.
Following energisation, Ndhiwa began receiving power directly from Sondu generation plant, reducing strain on the previously overloaded Muhoroni-Chemosit section and stabilising supply across the region.
For the first time in recent times, the region has gone through peak hours without load management. Previously, some customers in South Nyanza and South Rift were subjected to rotational load management due to transmission grid constraints.
“This is a significant reinforcement of the Nyanza and Western grid. It strengthens the supply path into the region, relieves pressure on overloaded sections of the network, and improves reliability, voltage stability, and customer experience, ” said Kenya Power Managing Director & CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror.
