#AfDBAM2024: Building resilient African economies in the face of global shocks
Organized by the Overseas Development Institute, in partnership with the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) and other leading African think tanks like the Economic Research Forum (ERF) and Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP). Supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).
Africa faces a compounding series of complex and interconnected challenges stemming from global crises, including the Russia–Ukraine war, regional instability, macroeconomic shocks, and pre-existing vulnerabilities like climate change and food insecurity.
These challenges undermine economic, social, and developmental progress, exacerbate fragility, and disproportionately impact marginalised populations. To address these interconnected issues, evidence-backed policy responses grounded in the African experience are essential.
The impact of overlapping crises is often most severe in the poorest and most fragile contexts. These states face unique limitations, hindering their capacity to absorb shocks and build resilience.
This underscores the need for urgent and structural responses tailored to these circumstances, with a critical focus on innovative finance solutions, policy intervention, and potential reforms within the global financial architecture, including the use of SDR financing.
This joint side event, organised by ODI, a London-based global affairs thin tank, and AERC, leverages cutting-edge research, including insights from IDRC-supported projects, to explore the multifaceted impacts of crises on African economies.
We will present evidence-based recommendations to help policymakers, development actors, and the private sector bolster resilience, inclusive growth, and social well-being across the continent. to mitigate their effects and build resilient African economies.
