Renowned consumer psychologist and marketing expert, Erick Wilson Wafula, was honored with the prestigious Pacesetter International Award in Consumer Psychology on August 30, 2024, at a ceremony held in Nairobi.

Established by the Jubilant Stewards of Africa (JSA), the annual Pacesetter International Awards recognize exceptional leaders and innovators across sub-Saharan Africa who demonstrate outstanding commitment to their fields.

Wafula has been celebrated for his groundbreaking work in integrating consumer psychology into marketing strategies.

As a pioneer in understanding consumer behavior, Wafula has transformed marketing practices in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, enhancing how businesses engage with their customers. Since 2019, he has led the marketing initiatives for Ringier’s operations across Africa, a Swiss company with a strong presence in Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Under Wafula’s leadership, several prominent Kenyan brands, including BrighterMonday, BuyRentKenya, Pigiame, and Cheki, have evolved their marketing campaigns to engage hundreds of thousands of users each month. His expertise extends beyond Kenya, having successfully tailored marketing strategies in Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Senegal to align with local consumer preferences.

Prior to his role at Ringier, Wafula was the Head of Digital Marketing and Advertising at The Advertising Company in Nairobi. There, he developed marketing strategies for major brands such as Heineken East Africa and Toyota Kenya.

Upon receiving the award, Wafula expressed his gratitude, stating, “This acknowledgement demonstrates how crucial it is to comprehend customer behaviour in the modern business climate.” He emphasized the growing importance of psychology in various sectors, noting, “Psychology is beginning to be applied in education and business,” highlighting a shift from its traditional association with mental health.

Wafula’s wife, Lilian Mumbi, a tax specialist and counseling psychologist, celebrated the recognition, commenting on the broader acceptance of psychology in diverse fields.

A well-respected figure in marketing, Wafula has previously received accolades, including being named one of Kenya’s top 25 Men in Digital in 2021 by the SOMA Awards and the Marketer of the Year by Adworld Masters the same year. He holds bachelor’s degrees in marketing from Kenyatta University and in psychology from the University of Nairobi.
