Maseno School, one of Kenya’s most distinguished and historically significant institutions, is set to commemorate 120 years of academic excellence and leadership on April 10, 2026, at its iconic grounds in Maseno. Founded in 1906 by John Jamieson Willis, the institution has, for generations, stood as a bastion of intellectual rigor, discipline, and nation building.
In a press briefing held on March 18, 2026, at the United Kenya Club, alumni and leaders of the Old Boys and Friends of Maseno School Foundation articulated both a candid reflection on the past and an ambitious roadmap for the future. The engagement set the tone for what is expected to be not merely a celebratory milestone, but a transformative moment in the institution’s evolving history.
Addressing members of the press, Joe Ager delivered a forthright assessment of alumni engagement over the years, acknowledging a degree of collective complacency.
“We have been guilty, as old boys, of a measure of neglect. We have not been as deliberate or innovative as we should have been in supporting the school’s infrastructural growth alongside its academic excellence,” said Joe Ager, chairman, Old Boys and Friends of Maseno School Foundation.
He announced a comprehensive master plan aimed at redeveloping the entire institution into a modern Centre of Excellence.
The initiative will prioritize the construction of advanced classrooms, cutting edge laboratories, improved residential facilities, and multipurpose halls designed to align with the evolving Competency Based Education and Training framework.
He emphasized that the vision is not incremental but transformational, an intentional effort to create an academic environment capable of sustaining relevance and excellence for another century.
Offering a deeply reflective historical narrative, Joseph Amolo Aluoch recounted his formative years at Maseno, painting a vivid contrast between the institution’s modest past and its present ambitions.
He described a time marked by limited resources, communal living, and a rigorous academic structure under the Cambridge examination system, an era that nonetheless produced resilient, disciplined, and intellectually grounded individuals.
“Those who do not learn from history risk forfeiting their future. Maseno instilled in us values that went far beyond the classroom it shaped our character and our capacity to navigate life,” said Dr. Joseph Amolo Aluoch who is an alumni of Maseno school.
He also underscored the evolution of education, noting the shift from rote memorization to critical thinking and problem solving, particularly in an age increasingly influenced by digital technology and artificial intelligence.
In his remarks, Jorim Amadi framed the 120-year celebration as both a historic achievement and a collective responsibility for all alumni. He highlighted the institution’s unique legacy, noting that Maseno School predates the Republic of Kenya and has played a pivotal role in shaping leaders across sectors.
“This milestone is a call to action. Every Maseno old boy, from 1906 to date, has a stake in this institution and a role to play in its renewal.”
He called upon alumni worldwide to contribute ideas, resources, and financial support to ensure the success of both the anniversary celebrations and the broader redevelopment initiative. He acknowledged previous efforts, including classroom construction, but emphasized that a more ambitious and coordinated approach is now required.
Providing further clarity on the initiative, Walter S Odhiambo outlined a far-reaching vision centered on quality, adaptability, and sustainability.
“We are looking at an investment of approximately KSh 2 billion to reposition Maseno as a learning institution that is responsive to contemporary educational demands and future realities”, said Walter S. Odhiambo, the Secretary Old Boys and Friends of Maseno School Foundation.
He stressed that the redevelopment goes beyond infrastructure to encompass the entire educational ecosystem, enhancing teaching quality, modernizing curriculum delivery, and expanding opportunities in sports, arts, and innovation. He also emphasized the importance of nurturing adaptability among students in a rapidly changing global environment.
Odhiambo further revealed that the Maseno School Foundation will serve as a critical vehicle for mobilizing resources and supporting bright but financially challenged students, ensuring inclusivity remains central to the school’s mission.
As Maseno School approaches this landmark anniversary, the message from its alumni is both reflective and resolute. The commemoration of 120 years is not simply about honoring a storied past, it is about igniting a renewed commitment to excellence, innovation, and collective responsibility.
From the halls of history to the promise of tomorrow, Maseno School stands at a defining crossroads, ready once again to shape the leaders and thinkers of generations to come.
