Kenya targets 25m passengers yearly on its airport upgrades

The government is targeting over 25million passengers annually by 2025 on the expansion of terminals at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Total passenger numbers has grown by 9 per cent to more than 6.5 million passengers and 250million kilograms of cargo over the last two years, despite the impact of terminals upgrades which put a dent in overall growth.

Speaking during the 6th Africa Aviation Law Conference 2016 in Nairobi, Principal Secretary (PS) in the State Department for Transport Irungu Nyakera said the government was further betting big on the upgrades of Terminals 1B, 1C and 1D whose designs are currently underway to boost capacity at the main international airport, serving several regional countries.

“The government has committed significant investment in terminals 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D & 1E at JKIA which are designed to significantly increase the capacity of the airport.

Terminals 1A and 1E are presently operational and so is the new international arrivals terminal which has made it possible to separate arriving from departing passengers,” said Mr. Nyakera.

If fully operational, it is estimated that the annual growth rate will shoot up by about 12 percent up from the current 9 percent over the projected period.

The recent audits, namely; global safety and security standards by ICAO Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP) and Universal Security Audit Programme (USAP) – which rated Kenya at 78.42 per cent and 89 per cent respectively are further expected to boost the country’s aviation sector.

The audits conducted in April and August this year places Kenya among the top 25 per cent states globally and in the top 5 in the continent with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPS) compliance.
