Apollo Group has bolstered its executive suite with the appointment of Catherine Karimi as the CEO of APA Life Assurance and Vinod Bharatan as the CEO of APA Insurance.

Ms Karimi takes the helm of one of Kenya’s oldest life insurers that provides life insurance and pension offerings. She becomes the first female to lead one of the Apollo Group subsidiaries.

She has over 18 years’ track record in the insurance industry in Kenya, during which she has strengthened the businesses she has worked in and introduced innovative products and services; besides keeping pace with the needs and aspirations of clients.

Mr Bharatan now heads one of Kenya’s largest non-life insurers. He commenced his career in insurance over 35 years ago at the United India Insurance Company in 1982.

He was quickly promoted and worked in numerous states throughout India, in charge of various branches, divisions and regions until 2013 when he joined Kenindia Assurance Company Ltd as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. He successfully turned the operation around by stabilizing the company operations and put it on a growth path.

Announcing the appointments, Apollo Group CEO, Ashok Shah said: “These two executives bring on board a proven track record of success in the Kenyan insurance industry. We are confident of their ability to steer the business to greater heights.”

The Apollo Group is one of the leading financial service groups in East Africa, comprising six subsidiaries — APA Insurance, APA Life, APA Uganda, Apollo Asset Management, Gordon Court (Apollo Centre) and Reliance Insurance, Tanzania.
