The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has come out to clarify that it has no intentions to shut down container freight stations at the port of Mombasa.
“In response to recent misleading reports, KRA wishes to clarify that there are no imminent intentions to close down Container Freight Stations on account of ongoing investigations,” said the authority in a statement Monday.
KRA was responding to reports which had hinted at a possible closure of two container freight stations (CFSs) at the coastal town this week following completion of investigations on tax evasion and illegal smuggling of goods at the busy port.
The reports had linked two private terminals of trafficking sugar, imported vehicles among other commodities while flouting customs rules set by the taxman.
The authority further sought to clarify that investigations were still on course and that upon conclusion ‘necessary’ actions will be taken including the issuance of tax demands against persons and companies found culpable of exploiting Customs processes.
“The correct position is that there are ongoing investigations touching on various operations including the handling of transit cargo both at the Port and CFS’.
In respect of CFS’, KRA is actively engaged in discussions to address issues of mutual interest, including the strengthening of CFS governance processes so as to help counter Customs frauds,” said commissioner general John Njiraini.
The authority further said that it plans to hold a joint meeting with CFS owners next week which is hoped will help find a common ground on key sensitive issues.
“KRA appreciates the role CFS’ play in helping decongest Port operations and remains committed to Government Policy in respect of streamlining CFS operations to help meet national objectives,” read the statement in part.
