US President Joe Biden to visit Israel in high-stakes trip

By Correspondent

The United States of America (USA) President Joseph Biden will make an extraordinary wartime visit to Israel tomorrow, Wednesday October 17, 2023 as a show of support for the country as it works to eliminate Hamas – a lethal Islamist militant movement and one of the Palestinian territories’ two major political parties.

Death toll on the Israeli side has reached 1,400 people on Tuesday.

In his recent TV interviews, Mr. Biden has expressed strong interest in making the journey after being invited over the weekend by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom Biden has known for four decades.

Biden is also pressing for ways to ease humanitarian suffering in Gaza.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Monday that the US and Israel “have agreed to develop a plan that will enable humanitarian aid from donor nations and multilateral organizations” to reach civilians in the war-torn region, according to reports by news network CNN.

Hamas’ fighters attacked southern Israel on October 7 with Israel responding by tightening its blockade on Hamas-ruled Gaza, including by restricting the entry of fuel, and bombarding the area with air raids that have killed more than 2,800 Palestinians and displaced hundreds of thousands more.

After visiting Israel, Biden would travel to Jordan to meet King Abdullah, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, US national security spokesperson John Kirby said.

Biden’s trip is a rare and risky choice, showing the US backing for Netanyahu as Washington tries to avert a broader regional war involving Iran, Iran’s Hezbollah and Syria.
