Cultural exchanges to bolster Kenya-Italy ties, envoy says

Italy-Kenya cultural exchanges will help contribute to a new cooperation paradigm and the stabilization of international relations between the two nations, says Italian ambassador to Kenya Dr. Roberto Natali.

“Diversity is key for cultural dialogue,” which plays an important role as we navigate a complex world rife with tensions, Natali told journalists in Nairobi during this year’s Week of the Italian Language in the World – Kenya Edition 2024.

This year, the Embassy of Italy in Nairobi and the Italian Institute of Culture designed a program to connect Kenyans to Italian literature, from Dante to modern-day authors, exploring the nuances of Italian language and its emotions through translation, showing how language connects diverse cultures, introducing new perspectives and interpretations that enrich the original texts.

Themed “Italian and the Book: The World between the Lines”, the ceremony saw participants explore the rich connections between cultures, creating a community of all those who have chosen Italian as a language of growth, innovation and openness.

“Italian language and literature have long captivated readers around the world, with a rich tapestry of works that span centuries and genres. From Dante Alighieri’s monumental “Divine Comedy” to the modern narratives of Italo Calvino and Elena Ferrante, Italian authors have contributed to literary movements and inspired countless writers,” said Natali.

Indeed, Kenya and Italy have enjoyed diplomatic relations for decades, and trade between the two nations has grown steadily. Italy, a member of the European Union, has been a significant development partner for Kenya, providing assistance in areas such as health, education, infrastructure, and agriculture.

In 2023 for instance, Kenya and Italy agreed to remove non-tariff barriers in their bid to stimulate trade and investment.

The two countries promised at the time to negotiate on the avoidance of a double-taxation agreement that will usher in higher levels of foreign direct investments.

Speaking at State House during a state visit by President Sergio Mattarella of Italy, President William Ruto disclosed that they had shared views about opportunities to improve the balance of trade between the two countries.

The cooperation, he explained, will be in the areas of agro-industrial, ICT and bio-fuel projects.
