Awards aimed at recognising organisations in the Coast Region that have innovative and impactful environmental conservation and restoration initiatives.
At the Pwani Mazingira Awards, held at Mombasa Beach Hotel on 27 June 2017, Bamburi Cement through Lafarge Ecosystems, the environmental arm of the Company, won a Pwani Mazingira Award for undertaking best environmental practices in the coast region.
Bamburi Cement won a 1st Runners up Trophy, a Certificate of Recognition and an award of Waste bins that will be used for segregating wastes at source.
“We are delighted to have emerged among the top in the Manufacturing, Production and Mining category. This, we attribute to our commitment in employing the best practices in quarry mining, rehabilitation and restoration,” said Mary Mueni, the Chief Operating Officer for Lafarge Eco Systems.
Ms Mueni further stated ‘The rehabilitation program championed through Lafarge Ecosystems continuously aims to recreate coastal ecosystems for biodiversity conservation and sustainable utilization of natural resources.
It’s ecological showcases, Haller Park and Forest Trails have been reformed systematically and have over time grown to become resource centres for environmental education and conservation, while also supporting community farming activities, including forestry and aquaculture in the restored quarries.’
The Pwani Mazingira Awards scheme is spearheaded by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) with support from the Kenya Coastal Development Project.
The event was attended by dignitaries, scientists, and Resource Managers from the Government Agencies such as NEMA, Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute, Academia including Pwani University, Technical University of Mombasa, and Kenyatta University among others. Private sector was well represented by Base Titanium, Hotel & Hospitality, Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers among others.

We are therefore committed to making a positive, tangible and sustainable difference.” Said Susan Maingi, Corporate Affairs, Communication & Sustainable Development Director, Bamburi Cement.
Ms Maingi added that this award restates the Company’s commitment to the sustainability agenda, and noted it comes on the heels of Bamburi Cement Ltd, Athi River plant being awarded the much coveted ISO 14001 environmental certification by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
The company has also invested in its operations processes to adapt the use of alternative fuels by recycling waste tyres and biomass as a source of clean energy. This substitutes the need to use fossil fuels reducing its carbon footprint. This is amongst other environmental conservation and restoration partnership with KENGEN foundation and Better Globe Forestry.
The Pwani Mazingira Awards scheme aims at building strategic partnerships to enhance and promote best practice in environmental practices; recognize and reward individuals, institutions and organizations undertaking best environmental practices; Inculcate a culture of self-regulation to achieve excellence and promote a platform to showcase their commitment to environmental management.
