Mobile operators’ net earnings jumped Kes315 billion in 2021
Other mobile services generated the most revenues for the five mobile operators including Safaricom, Airtel Networks, Telkom Kenya, Finserve and Jamii Telkom (JTL) according to filings made by the firms to the Communication Authority of Kenya (CA).
Kenya’s mobile services generated revenue of KES 315.0 billion in 2021, representing an increase of 12.45 per cent compared to 2020, the latest industry data has shown.
Data for the fourth quarter sector statistics report for the financial year 2021/2022 (1st April – 30th June 2022) by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) further shows that investments in the mobile sub-sector grew by 12.41per cent to stand at 51.6 billion from KES 45.9 billion a year earlier.
During the reference period, Safaricom PLC recorded the highest market shares in domestic mobile voice and SMS at 90.3 and 66.3 percent, respectively. Jamii Telecommunications Ltd recorded the least market shares at 0.0 per cent.
During the Financial Year 2021/22, the mobile telephone service sub-sector was marked by a significant regulatory intervention that involved updating the registration details of all SIM cards in the country.
This exercise resulted to deactivation of SIM cards registered under the wrong identification details. Subsequently, active mobile subscriptions declined to 64.7 million in the fourth quarter from 64.9 million recorded during the previous quarter, translating to a mobile (SIM) penetration level of 130.9 per cent.
