Google has laid off hundreds of employees working on its hardware, voice assistance and engineering teams as part of cost-cutting measures.
The cuts come as Google looks towards “responsibly investing in our company’s biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead,” the company said in a statement.

The company, which has been working to trim expenses, laid off employees who worked on core engineering, the Google Assistant product and hardware such as the Pixel phone.

The firm’s employees were in a frenzy one year ago when the company decided to suddenly lay off 12,000 staff members, which turned out to be the biggest ever layoff in the history of the company.

According to a statement by Google to 9to5Google, the tech giant is also laying off employees in the Devices and Services teams, which are responsible for making products like Nest, Fitbit and Pixel.

A recent report from 9to5Google suggests Google seems to be reorganizing things by switching to a more functional organizational model that involves a single team working on the hardware front to make products like Pixel, Nest and Fitbit.
Moreover, it looks like there will be a single person responsible for all the hardware Google is working on, but it remains to be seen if the move will unify the tech giant’s varying product lineup.
